A major international project entitled \n\u201cMultimodal Data Analysis For Monitoring Invasive Aquatic Weeds In \nIndia\u201d has been sanctioned with Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, Principal \nInvestigator of the Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources of our \nCollege as a collaborator. The partnering institutions include the \nUniversity of Stirling (leading partner) and University of Strathclyde \nfrom United Kingdom along with International Crops Research Institute \nfor the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Indian Institute of Plant Health\n Management (IIPHM) in Hyderabad. The project is funded by the Royal \nAcademy of Engineering, London under its \u201cFrontiers Follow-on\u201d scheme \nwhich comes under the Global Challenges Research Fund of the UK \nGovernment.
It is a multi-national, multi-institutional and \nmulti-disciplinary project which aims to develop effective methods that \ncombine the use of multiple data sources (satellite and drone \nobservations and ground-based sensors) to monitor the spread of invasive\n aquatic weed, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in the Kuttanad \nregion of Kerala. Algorithms will be devised combining multi-modal data\n for effective detection, pilot trials will be carried out and \nsustainability ensured through training and dissemination activities. \nThe total grant sanctioned is British Pounds (\u00a3) 2.99 Lakhs, \napproximately Rupees 2.8 crores for the project lasting 3 years.
Dr.\n Prabhu has more than 25 years of research experience and has \nestablished the Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources in the College \nin 2011. He has developed many innovative rural technologies for the \nvalue addition of aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth and is a \nrecipient of more than 20 national and international awards and \nfellowships. Currently he is the Chairman, U. G. Board of Studies in \nBiotechnology of the University of Kerala and a life member of 5 \nnational Scientific Societies.
