The department started functioning on 1st June 1957 and is now a department offering undergraduate and postgraduate training in Chemistry. The department is recognized as a Research department by the University of Kerala. Those who wish to register for their Ph.Dprogrammes can contact the department heads. There are also research projects conducted in collaboration with various government and non-governmental agencies. Considering theimportance of Kuttanad region of Kerala where the college is situated, the department undertook a study of water pollution in the river Pampa and soil pollution in the paddy fields in collaboration with CUSAT and the Agricultural Department of the Government of Kerala .<\/p>\n
Another area that the department focuses on is Polymer Chemistry. There are approved research guides who supervise Ph. D. projects in that area.
